Rosa 'Zephirine Drouhin'

Genus: Rosa - Family: Rosaceae

Phonetic Spelling: RO-zuh

Common Names:

  • Charles Bonnet
  • Zephirine Drouhin

The Zephirine Drouhin is a climbing shrub in the rose family (Rosaceae).  It originated from Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean which was formerly known as Ile Bourbon.  Hence it is known as a Bourbon rose.  It was brought to France around 1870 and named after the wife of a contemporary horticulturist.

This rose is tolerant of shade and poor soils.  However, it flourishes in warmer climates with full sun, consistent moisture, and rich, organic matter.  It can grow up to 12 feet as a climber.  If grown as a shrub, the arching branches may reach a width of 3-6 feet.  As with other climbing roses, it should not be pruned the first two to three years to enable the development of the flowering rose canes.

The Zephirine Drouhin is considered a disease-resistant rose.  It is highly resistant to black spot, powdery mildew, and Japanese beetles.  It will continue to bloom even with black spots on its leaves.  Stem cuttings can be taken in spring or fall for propagation.

The Zephirine Drouhin is a vigorous and floriferous rose that blooms spring to fall.  It has a strong, fruity fragrance and is almost prickle-free (thornless).  Deadheading is not required, but will encourage more blooms.  Some consider it the best and most reliable heirloom climbing rose.

It should be placed near a patio or walkway to enjoy its fragrance.  The Zephirine Drouhin can easily cover a trellis, fence, or arbor.  It can also be grown as a shrub specimen.

Insects, Diseases, and Other Plant Problems: This is highly disease-resistant. It may get black spots and powdery mildew. It may attract Japanese beetles.
